In post-Franco Spain many were glad to shake off Catholic social and sexual mores and to experiment. This was the period that saw the emergence of exciting and innovative film directors like Pedro Almodóvar and bands like Radio Futura and Alaska y los Pegamoides. At the same time the media, music and fashion industries sought to distance themselves from the mass-produced popular culture of the US and UK and to establish their own Spanish identity.* * *1) (Jueg) move2) (Esp)a) (fam) (asunto, rollo)anda en movidas chuecas — (Méx) he's into some shady deals (colloq)

6 Guerras de Independencia
Spain's War of Independence against Napoleon Bonaparte's French occupation was ignited by the popular revolt in Madrid on 2 May 1808 against the French army. The reprisal executions are commemorated in a famous painting by Francisco de Goya. With support from the Duke of Wellington, Spanish resistance continued for over five years in a guerra de guerrillas which gave the world the concept and the term guerrilla warfare. The autocratic Fernando VII was restored to the throne in 1814, and his first act was to abolish the progressive Constitution of Cadiz adopted in 1812.The Wars of Independence of Spain's Latin American colonies were inspired partly by the ideas of the French encyclopédistes, partly by the example of the American and French Revolutions, and partly by Spain's own resistance to French domination. Argentina achieved independence in 1816. Simón Bolívar of Caracas led a freedom movement that was to sweep South America and earned him the title El Libertador. By 1840 all the mainland Spanish colonies were independent. Others who played a crucial roles in the independence struggles of Spain's colonies during the nineteenth century include Hidalgo, Morelos and Guerrero (Mexico), Sucre and Miranda (Venezuela, Peru), San Martín, Brown and Belgrano (Argentina), O'Higgins, San Martín (Chile), Céspedes and Martí (Cuba). -

9 peronismo
1 Peronism* * *SM PeronismPERONISMO General Juan Domingo Perón (1895-1974) came to power in Argentina in 1946, on a social justice platform known as justicialismo. He aimed to break Argentina's dependence on exports by developing the domestic economy through state-led industrialization. Peronismo stood for nationalization of industry, trade unions, paid holidays, the welfare state and the provision of affordable housing. Women were given the vote in 1947, a move championed by Perón's charismatic wife "Evita" (María Eva Duarte). Following her death in 1952, Perón's support began to crumble and he was driven into exile in 1955. His party was banned for almost a decade and did not regain power until 1973, when he was recalled from exile to become President. He died the following year. Peronismo as a movement has survived, and the Peronist party returned to power in 1989 under Carlos Menem.* * *masculino Peronism•• Cultural note:A political movement, known officially as justicialismo, named for the populist politician Colonel Juan Domingo Perón, elected President of Argentina in 1946. Although he instituted some social reforms, Perón's regime proved increasingly repressive and he was ousted in an army coup in 1955. m.Indianism.* * *1 (movimiento) indigenous movement2 (vocablo) native language borrowing* * *SM1) (=movimiento) indigenism, pro-Indian political movement; (=estudio) study of Indian societies and cultures2) (Ling) word/phrase borrowed from a native language* * *A (doctrina, estudio) indigenism* * *indigenismo nm1. [cultural] Indianism2. [político] indigenism3. [palabra, frase] indigenism, = word originating from an indigenous languageINDIGENISMODuring the colonial period, and even after independence, the indigenous peoples of Latin America were often regarded as inferior by the leaders of cultural thought among those of European or mixed-race descent. This generated a sense of guilt among many intellectuals when they confronted the issue of indigenous peoples in their society, and led to the growth of a movement in their favour. The political and cultural analyses of the Peruvian Marxist José Carlos Mariátegui (1895-1930) were one manifestation of this tendency. In Mexico, the pro-Indian policies of the government of Lázaro Cárdenas (1934-40) redressed many injustices, but scandalized the traditional urban elite. In literature, “indigenista” writers took as their subject the lives, and more particularly the sufferings, of the Indian. Major works of this kind, such as the Ecuadoran Jorge Icaza's “Huasipungo” (1934) or “Los ríos profundos” (1958) by Peru's José María Arguedas have undoubted power, though latterly their sometimes crude realism has been contrasted unfavourably with “magic realist” treatments of Indian culture, such as “Hombres de Maíz” (1949) by Guatemala's Miguel Angel Asturias. -

Basque
* * *euskera, eusquera, euskara nmBasqueEUSKERAEuskera (or Basque) is one of several official languages in Spain. It is spoken in the northern Spanish region of Euskadi (the Basque Country), in the neighbouring province of Navarra, and in the Basque region of France. Its origin is unknown as it is not an Indo-European language. For decades euskera was either banned or officially unrecognized, and as a consequence it was mainly spoken only in rural areas. However, in recent times it has re-emerged with the support of the Basque nationalist movement and is being promoted as the official language for use in schools and education, and a growing number of schoolchildren can now speak the language. Today euskera is used by an increasing number of well-known authors, including the internationally acclaimed Bernardo Atxaga.* * *euskera nm: Basque (language)* * *euskera n Basque -

During the Franco régime, the use of Galician and other minority national languages was prohibited in the media and in public institutions. It has enjoyed lengua cooficial status alongside castellano since 1981. There are several dialects of the language and formal attempts to standardize them in the 1970s were unsuccessful. However, a standard form is now beginning to emerge naturally in the larger urban areas.See:ver nota culturelle LENGUAS COOFICIALES in lengua* * *I- ga adjetivoa) ( de Galicia) Galicianb) (AmL fam) ( español) SpanishII- ga masculino, femeninoa) ( de Galicia) Galicianb) (AmL fam) ( español) Spaniardc) gallego masculino (Ling) Galician•• Cultural note:The language of Galicia, spoken by around 3 million people. It is spoken in the northwestern region of Galicia. Like Spanish and Catalan, it stems from late Latin, and it has many similarities to Portuguese in grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. For decades Galician was either banned or officially unrecognized, and as a consequence it was mainly spoken in traditional or rural areas. However, in recent times it has re-emerged with the support of the Galician nationalist movement and is being promoted as the official language for use in schools and education. Although many Galician-born authors have written mainly or exclusively in Spanish, one of Spain's greatest nineteenth century poets, Rosalía de Castro, wrote much of her poetry in Gallego. Today Galician is used by an increasing number of well-known authors, one of the best-known of whom is the poet and short story writer Manuel Rivas.* * *I adj1 Galician2 Rpl famSpanishII m, gallega f1 Galician2 Rpl famSpaniard* * *gallego, -ga adj1) : Galiciangallego, -ga n1) : Galician* * *gallego adj n Galician -
